caring for your child:

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)

Dr. Tiffany and her team celebrate your child’s successful dental visit! Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) offers a minimally invasive method to stop early cavities in their tracks. We are honored to be your partner in building and maintaining your child’s healthy smile.

1. Immediate Care (The First Hour)

The medicine requires 60 minutes to properly harden the tooth surface.

  • Wait to Eat/Drink: Do not allow your child to eat or drink anything (including water) for one hour after treatment.
  • Taste: A metallic taste is normal and will go away soon.

2. Diet & Routine (Hours 1–24)

  • Temperature: Stick to cool or room-temperature foods and drinks for the first 6 hours.
  • Activity: Normal play and activities can resume immediately; there are no restrictions.
  • Reduction: Limit sugary and acidic foods and drinks are necessary.

3. What to Expect: Appearance

  • Black Staining: SDF will turn the treated cavity black. This is a positive sign that the SDF is working; healthy enamel will remain unstained.
  • Temporary Staining: Light-brown staining may appear on lips, gums, or tongue. This is harmless and will fade in days to weeks.

4. Hygiene Instructions: Important for SDF to be completely effective

  • Brushing: Gentle brushing 2 x a day with soft bristle toothbrush may resume after 6 hours.
  • Flossing: Floss 1 x day
  • Rinsing: Only rinse gently with water for the first day; avoid forceful spitting.
