How to Prepare Your Child For Their Visit

Preparing for a Joyful Visit: Welcome to Your Child's Dental Home

We understand that visiting the dentist is a new adventure, and we are experts at easy first visits. To help guide your child toward a comfortable and safe appointment, we’ve put together some helpful age-appropriate tips to try at home:

For Infants & Toddlers (Ages 0-3): Gentle Beginnings

  • Keep it positive and relaxed: At this age, building trust and a feeling of safety is our main goal. Talk about the dentist with a cheerful voice.
  • Play "Dentist" at home: Practice counting their teeth using a soft toothbrush to make the sensations feel familiar and fun.
  • Focus on comfort: We recommend bringing their favorite comfort item, like a blanket or stuffed animal, to help them feel at home. Starting early with prevention and good habits ensures a healthy foundation for their beautiful smile!

For Preschoolers (Ages 3-5): Shining Bright & Learning

  • Use happy, simple words: Tell them they are going to visit a special doctor who is going to count their teeth and help their smile shine bright. (Avoid words like hurt, shot, or drill; instead, use gentle words like check-up, tickle, and clean).
  • Read together: Choose encouraging children's books or watch happy videos about visiting the dentist to help them understand what to expect.
  • Celebrate the milestone: Frame the visit as a fun, special outing where they get to show off their strong, healthy teeth to our caring team.

For School-Aged Children (Ages 6-12): Empowering Healthy Habits

  • Answer questions honestly but gently: Children this age are naturally curious. Reassure them that our team will explain everything we do step-by-step to keep them comfortable.
  • Empower them: Remind them that they are a big part of the team! We will guide and support them in learning how to care for their confident smiles at home.

For Teens (Ages 13+): A Partnership in Dental Health

  • Encourage independence: Teens appreciate being treated with respect. We talk directly with them to educate and empower them to take charge of their own lifelong dental habits.
  • Focus on lifelong health: Frame their check-ups as an important part of their overall wellness routine and achieving a beautiful, healthy smile they can feel proud of.

What ages do we see?

At Southern Smiles Pediatric Dentistry, we see patients from infancy through adolescence. This includes care for infants, children, teens, and kids with special healthcare needs.

Consistent with the AAPD guidelines mentioned in our resources, we recommend that a child’s first dental visit occur by their first birthday to establish a "dental home" and begin a journey of prevention and healthy habits.
